As the father of murdered journalist Alison Parker, I have a unique perspective on two of the greatest threats to society today: gun violence and the unchecked power of social media. I call it the confluence of “Guns and Google”—a toxic cycle where social media amplifies violence, radicalizes individuals, and allows the spread of dangerous content under the guise of “free speech.” But posting murder and mayhem online is not free speech—it is savagery.

Gun violence and social media abuse are inextricably linked, from illegal firearm sales to the radicalization of mass shooters. The overwhelming majority of Americans agree on sensible reforms: universal background checks, national red flag laws, and a ban on assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines. Likewise, social media must be held accountable through reforming Section 230(c)(1) and compelling platforms to combat hate speech, bullying, and violent content.

Since Alison’s murder, I have fought to hold Congress, Big Tech, and the gun lobby accountable for their failure to act. My goal is to inform, challenge, and inspire action. If you’re here, I hope you’ll engage, share, and join the fight.

For a change of pace, I also write about culture, history, and the unexpected connections that shape our world—what I like to call “cultural scavenging.” My podcast, The Cultural Scavenger, is now part of this Substack. Take a spin through the archives—you never know what you might find.

You won’t have to worry about missing anything. Every new edition of the newsletter goes directly to your inbox, and you have my promise I won’t sell your information.
